Automatic voltage regulator for power generators

Improvement of Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) with stabilization channels (PSS) for excitation systems of power generators

Overview

The control system structure of the automatic voltage regulator of strong action (ARV SD) is the most common control system for excitation systems of power generators in the CIS countries. We made modification to the structure of voltage regulator to improve performance of excitation system.

Highlights of Designed Control System

The control system structure of the automatic voltage regulator with power system stabilizer (PSS) named AVR SDPK contains:

  • PID controller of stator voltage,

  • stabilization channels:

        -  by frequency deviation of stator voltage;

        -  by frequency derivative of stator voltage;

        -  by excitation current derivative;

  • channel blockers.

Unlike AVR regarding to IEEE 421.5, the regulator has the following differences:

  • used additional stabilization channel with derivative rotor current;

  • used frequency of the stator voltage for the PSS;

Stages of project

  • Parameter calculation of the generator and grid model based on parameters in documentation;

  • Validating the simulation results by open loop tests;

  • Parameter estimation of the generator and grid model to fit simulation and experimental dat;

  • Modification the control system;

  • Tuning the controller and stabilization channels;

  • Simulation;

  • Validating the simulation results ;

Proof

On January 21-24, 2019, the control system AVR SDPK was tested as part of a turbogenerator excitation system installed on 320MW Unit 3 of Kharkivska CHPP-5.

The tests were carried out in accordance with the “Energy Technology and Governance Program (ETAG) Ukraine power system support project consultancy to Ukrenergo for interconnection of Ukraine electric transmission grid with ENTSO-E”. The tests were conducted with the participation of National Power Company Ukrenergo (Ukraine), EPRA (Turkey), United States Energy Association (USA), Institute Of Power Engineering From Gdansk (Poland).

The test results showed high efficiency of the power system stabilizer (PSS) and the regulator AVR which are the components of the control system structure AVR SDPK.

As of today, control system AVR SDPK is installed in excitation systems of Ukrainian manufacturer at 18 power units with a total capacity of 1347 MW in Ukraine and Georgia.
