Autotuning the parameters of PID controllers of DC drives

Autotuning the parameters of current and speed PID controllers for DC drives. Pre-Identification the electrical and mechanical DC motor parameters

Overview

Reducing the cost of commissioning an electric drive is an urgent task. Setting the parameters of current and speed regulators in the control system of a DC electric drive requires basic knowledge in the theory of automatic control, the experience of an adjuster and takes a lot of time. The current regulator, which is used in DC drives, has an adaptive structure that changes depending on the working area - continuous or intermittent currents. When setting up, it is necessary to select the coefficients of the current regulator for each zone and adjust the speed regulator.

In order to reduce the commissioning time, an algorithm for automatic adjustment of the parameters of the adaptive current controller and speed controller was developed.

The input data for calculating the parameters of the adaptive current regulator were the required transient time in the areas of intermittent and continuous currents, the damping coefficient for the continuous current area.

The input data for calculating the parameters of the speed controller were the required time of the transient process, the damping coefficient.

Highlights

An algorithm has been developed for the automatic determination of the parameters of a DC electric drive: an equivalent electromagnetic time constant of a DC circuit, an electromechanical time constant (determined by the moment of inertia), collection data of the characteristic of the DC current as a function of the thyristor firing angle for the zone of intermittent and continuous currents in automatic mode.

The above algorithms have been implemented on a controller as a service program. The tests were carried out on bench equipment on active-inductive loads with different equivalent time constants of the DC circuit, as well as on a number of objects. Modes with different damping coefficients and transient times were investigated.

Tests of the automatic tuning program for the parameters of current and speed regulators in the control system of a DC drive have shown good results.

Achievements

At present, the program for automatic adjustment of the parameters of current and speed regulators is used as a standard service program in DC electric drives manufactured by one of the Ukrainian enterprises to reduce the commissioning time at the facilities.
