Development of a 1000V, 200A Active Front-End Rectifier

for Battery Energy Storage Systems

The Active Front-End (AFE) converter is used as a grid inverter in microgrids with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and solar power plants. This project focused on the development and optimization of a 1000V, 200A AFE converter.

Work Performed:

  • Development of a control system for grid-forming and grid-following operation

  • Electrical engineering and system design

  • Modeling and simulation for parameter optimization

  • Validation of system performance under different operating conditions

Modeling Objectives:

  • Determination of power circuit component parameters (AC filter design, inverter component selection)

  • Analysis of harmonic distortion in AC filter current

  • Optimization of the control system architecture for the target application

  • Tuning of control system regulators to meet performance criteria

  • Validation in rectifier and inverter operating modes

  • Assessment of system behavior under overload conditions

  • Verification of reactive power control capabilities

  • Comprehensive performance analysis and reporting


Success Criteria:

  • Compliance with specified operating modes

  • Adherence to grid harmonic requirements

  • Optimization and minimization of power circuit component parameters


Simulation Outcome:
The simulation results provided detailed recommendations on circuit element parameters, control system settings, and overall system performance.
